Glass or Acrylic: What the Weight Difference Actually Is
The sheet of glass or acrylic over a picture is usually the heaviest single component of a frame, and its weight decides what hardware the wall needs. The glazing weight calculator estimates it from the sheet's area, its thickness, and the material's density.
Standard picture glass runs about 2.5 grams per cubic centimetre. Acrylic — sold as plexiglass, Perspex or Plexiglas depending on the brand — runs about 1.18. That is a little under half, and for the same sheet size it translates directly into a little under half the weight.
What the difference actually amounts to
At 2 mm thickness, across common frame sizes:
- 8×10 in → glass 0.26 kg, acrylic 0.12 kg
- 11×14 in → glass 0.50 kg, acrylic 0.23 kg
- 16×20 in → glass 1.03 kg, acrylic 0.49 kg
- 24×36 in → glass 2.79 kg, acrylic 1.32 kg
- 30×40 in → glass 3.87 kg, acrylic 1.83 kg
On a small frame the difference is a fifth of a kilogram and irrelevant. On a 30×40 it is over two kilograms, which is enough to change the fixing you use and enough to matter when someone is holding the frame overhead against a wall.
Thickness scales the weight linearly
Weight is area times thickness times density, so doubling the thickness doubles the weight exactly. A 3 mm sheet weighs 1.5× what the same 2 mm sheet weighs; a 4 mm sheet weighs twice as much.
This is worth checking when comparing quotes, because glazing thickness is not standardised across suppliers and a frame specified with 3 mm glass will be noticeably heavier than one with 2 mm. The calculator takes thickness in millimetres regardless of whether you give the sheet dimensions in inches or centimetres, because that is how glazing is conventionally specified.
Weight is not the only axis
Acrylic wins on weight and on safety — it does not shatter into edges, which is the reason it is generally preferred for children's rooms, for anything above a bed, and for large pieces where a fall would be dangerous.
Glass wins on scratch resistance and on optical stability over time. Acrylic scratches from ordinary dusting if the cloth is dirty, carries a static charge that attracts dust to its inner surface, and can bow slightly across a large span. Neither material is simply better; the trade is weight and safety against surface durability.
UV filtering is a separate specification
Both materials are available with UV-filtering treatments, and both are available without. The treatment is not implied by the material and does not meaningfully change the weight, so it does not appear in the calculator at all.
If the piece is a photograph, a print on paper, or anything with dyes, UV filtering is the specification that determines whether it fades. It is worth asking for explicitly rather than assuming, since standard glazing of either material offers only limited protection.
Use the figure to choose the hanging hardware
The glazing is not the whole weight — the moulding, the mat, the backing and the artwork all add to it — but on a large piece it is usually the largest single contributor and the easiest to estimate accurately.
Take the glazing figure, add a realistic allowance for the rest of the assembly, and choose hardware rated well above the total. Wall fixings are rated for a static load in ideal conditions; the load on a picture hook is neither perfectly static nor applied in ideal conditions, and derating generously costs nothing.
