Not Professional Framing or Conservation Advice

The Mat Border Calculator, Frame Size Calculator, Aspect Ratio Calculator, Print Resolution Calculator, Glazing Weight Calculator, and Picture Hanging Calculator produce educational estimates for planning a framing project, not a professional assessment. They are not a substitute for advice from a professional framer or conservator, and they don’t evaluate the condition, value, or conservation needs of any specific piece. If you’re framing something valuable, fragile, irreplaceable, or with existing damage, get advice from a qualified professional before cutting mats, mounting, or hanging based on a number from this site.

How the Numbers Are Estimated

Each calculator applies straightforward geometry or a widely used material figure to whatever you enter — for example, adding a border or molding width twice to get an outer size, reducing a width/height pair to its ratio, dividing pixels by print size for PPI, or multiplying area by thickness and a typical material density for glazing weight. These are general figures, not measurements of your specific artwork, frame stock, or glazing sheet, which can vary by manufacturer and batch.

Where a Result Might Not Fit Your Project

A calculator result is more likely to miss the mark if your frame or molding stock doesn’t match the profile width you entered, your glazing supplier’s material has a different density than the typical figure used here, or your artwork has an irregular shape or existing damage that changes how it should be mounted or matted. In any of these cases, treat the tool’s output as a starting point to confirm against the actual materials in hand, not a final answer.

Museum & Learn Content

Entries in the museum and learn sections are sourced from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons and presented largely as published there. FrameBug doesn’t independently fact-check every claim in that source material, and Wikipedia entries can be incomplete, outdated, or edited after we pull them. Treat these sections as a starting point for further reading, not a verified reference.
