Two measurements, one level hang
Hanging a picture well comes down to two independent numbers: where the hook sits left-to-right (centered on the wall or the furniture below it) and how high it sits off the floor. The vertical number is the trickier of the two, because the hook isn't at the artwork's center — it's above it, by however much the wire drops down from the frame's top edge when it's pulled taut.
Skipping that wire-drop adjustment is the most common reason a "centered" piece ends up hanging noticeably higher than planned — the math above accounts for it directly, so the finished hang lands where you actually intended.

How is the hook height calculated?
The calculator centers the artwork itself — not the frame's top edge — at eye level, so the frame's top edge sits at eye-level center plus half the frame's height. The hook or nail then goes below that top edge by the wire drop: the distance from the top of the frame down to where the wire sits when pulled taut. Hook height = eye-level center + (frame height ÷ 2) − wire drop.
What is the standard eye-level height, and why 57 inches?
57 inches (about 145cm) off the floor is the common museum and gallery convention for the center of a piece of art, based on average adult eye height. It's a solid default for most rooms and most viewers, but feel free to override it — a piece hung above a low console, or one in a room used mostly by children, might reasonably sit lower.
How do I measure the wire drop?
With the wire attached to the frame's hardware, hook a finger under the wire and pull it straight up until it's taut, the way it will sit on a wall hook — then measure straight down from the top edge of the frame to that taut point. That distance is the wire drop this calculator needs; it varies with how the wire is strung and how far down the D-rings or hooks sit on the frame's back.
Why not just center the frame's top edge at eye level instead?
Because a frame with a lot of empty mat above the artwork would look off-center if you measured to the frame's top instead of the artwork's visual center — centering the artwork itself is what actually reads as 'centered' to a viewer, matching how museums hang work regardless of how much mat surrounds the piece.
Does the wall width need to be the whole room, or can I center over furniture?
Use whatever width makes sense for the specific placement — the full wall if the piece is meant to be centered on the wall itself, or the width of a piece of furniture (a sofa, a console table) if you're centering the art over that instead. The horizontal-center math is the same either way: half of whatever width you enter.
